I've seen stories of parents arguing that children couldn't have their grades tied to homework at all.
They took the position they're required to make their kids available for education N days per year, and they do so, and so that's where an obligation ends. The school must get-it-done in the day.
I'd love to see those "studies" look at countries like Japan, Norway, Finland, etc, longer school years, longer school days, and yes, homework. If you play a sport, you practice to play better, homework is academic practice
