A certain color or pattern to indicate: "hey this is exhaust, careful" or this color means aft and this one port, this pattern means airlock, so keep it clear when not docking, etc.

You’re right! When I did this scheme the only rule I had was: diamonds = engines / super danger area. Else, there would be slight icons/decals near some more specific areas. But on large scale it’s shape based as at the time the choice of colour scheme was still not 100% locked down

Last I checked, colour was going to be very varied amongst the “tribes” of the same faction. I’m not sure if that’s going to be in the final game, but I do hope so! It’s really fun to think about how a culture is going to be reflected by choice of colour even the choice of not painting tells u smtg

An opposing faction (when I submitted my work at least hope it ends up in the final game intact too) I made their literal concrete ships completely unpainted, showing their truth to materials and simple and utilitarian nature a reflection of their society and culture etc

There's actual reasoning behind painting ships a certain way, especially in space.

Since there is no up down left right, the paint scheme can help determine which way the ship is facing so if you are approaching it, you have a good idea of its orientation
