A better alternative would be maybe give incentives; it still provides an opportunity whilst they still make business from your patronage.

I don't think there's really much you can do other than lottery if you want it to be fair and have everyone have equal chance to get a spot, regardless of other circumstances.

I want to agree but as cons grow and the number of people interested reaches 2x, 3x the capacity of the con, they very much feel like they are "fair by virtue of everyone being screwed equally" and reward underhanded screwiness like making plans with several groups of people and ditching all but one

When they grow beyond capacity, that's where it becomes even more important, because it makes it less and less fair.

Lottery systems don't discriminate. They're probably as fair as you can get.

It's easy to say that, but in reality, they're both unfair just in different ways. FCFS and lottery both reward popularity, but first come first serve rewards putting in effort above that. To be honest, I think that makes it a better system.

I disagree with that. A lottery gives everyone an equal chance - you can't get more fair than that.

First come first serve disadvantages you if: Working/traveling/sleeping at the time or if you have poor internet. Those things you often don't control and can't change no matter the effort.

I think it's less strain on the system too, because people don't all need to rush like crazy (or even use bots to spam it) at the time of registration, but get it more spread out.

Yeah, was in a meeting and couldn't login immediately. Checked like 5 minutes after receiving the email and everything was booked that's anywhere near the con.
