How old are we talking? Are you able to get into the BIOS menu? Does the BIOS detect the hard drive?

It's been a long time, obviously, but for a machine that old, IIRC there are some boot loader limitations on how deep into the hard drive the boot sectors can be. Not sure if that's the issue, but might be.
