I debated a stamp when it came to the 700 special editions I'd have to sign for a book box precisely bc you had one! I was able to thankfully push through, but it was nice to even think about it as an option. I think if it had to be more than that I'd do the stamp 😵‍💫

It makes me sad that this is even a debate. I could not be less concerned with how the author applies their signature to my book; at the end of the day, I’m just delighted to have a chance to meet them and have their signature in the book they wrote.

I once had such a fun time talking to an author that she forgot to sign the book. It just says, “To Britt, love” :) I was just grateful to tell her how much I had loved her work over the years.

I went to a reading once and the author had a stamp too. I like it a lot - she had a special little stamp. Looked pretty good and I was happy with it!

What if you design your own stamp? That makes it original & saves wear & tear on your hands. I'm an artist who has had arthritis of the hands for a quarter century as well as carpal & tendonitis episodes. I continue to work & play music on the side, by working smarter, not harder.

I do a new one for every tour and large event, and usually have either some kind of art or text beyond my signature to indicate it's unique for that event.

I don't want to see anybody suffer for their art. Making the art is enough, there doesn't need to be casualties! The grindset, "no pain, no gain" mentality is doing folks in way before their time and those authors don't even see it.

Like my skin is impenetrable when it comes to this particular topic. Being the internet character of the week and having people debate if I'm really disabled enough to use a stamp will do that to someone.

And it was worth it, because at least a few authors I know now feel comfy using a stamp now.

I'd take that hit a dozen times over if it saves other authors from hurting themselves. Or makes publishers THINK before they ask us to sign thousands of tip sheets in a short amount of time. OR... The list goes on.

This industry is not kind to authors' bodies, and that often gets overlooked because we should just be GRATEFUL for the opportunity. We should be happy anyone wants our signature at all. "Better have the icepacks ready! LOL."

It's still your hands applying ink to paper in the shape of your signature. In my opinion, both kinds of signatures are equally valid.
