I always imagined his relationship with the crystal as one similar to that of a toxic lover, and Gio did an amazing job capturing that dynamic.
Now that you mention it, that could be why Kimmuriel and Entreri wasnt effected, they are both so used to Jarlaxle they have learned to say no to the most unhinged ideas.
