I just finished watching The Substance. It had to be the most over the top body-horror Chronenbergesque violent baseball bat to face disturbing scene after disturbing scene blood fest I’ve ever seen. And it had a good message! Not sure I’d recommend it. - ThreadSky

"not sure I'd recommend it" is sorta where I am with it, but in reality I've been indiscriminately recommending it to more people than I maybe should! Esp. to some non-horror friends who are into offbeat films because if you've never seen body horror, you might as well see one with a high budget!

IMO, you're overthinking it. I found it to be ridiculous, but in a fun, bonkers way. i enjoyed it quite a bit as kooky, gory escapism.

It's not subtle by any means but I think it was well done and the concept of the primary vs. the other (or whatever the terminology was) and the lure of addiction was intriguing.
