Geography. France is flat as hell. Our geography is sadly not suited economically to the physics of a high speed system. High capacity should be our focus going forward. Much better £/mile

That might explain some of the cost but we are terrible at procurement with HS2 they kept changing their minds. Plan properly use existing tech that’s how HS1 was built and how it is done in Spain. It is about capacity though not speed.

Operation est 2029, £47bn cost.
