This doesn’t read as people afraid for themselves, but worried for attendees, and wanting to make sure legislators and organizers take these threats seriously and know how to respond. Most long time activists are used to this. Newby citizens who show up are not.

And I say that as someone who HAS faced down the Proud Boys on the street, repeatedly.

I am not positioned to do that now-- I have very young kids depending on me as their mom-- and as someone who can't take that risk I'm not trying to stage manage resistance.

It's not even about cowardice, necessarily, it's about what you have capacity to do versus what the moment demands.

If the moment demands an action you are not able to take part in, don't position yourself as a leader of a group that charges itself with that specific sort of action.

And it's worth noting, moments usually demand more than one type of action, it's just that some are more glamorous (and, in the case of "resistance" NGOs, sometimes financially lucrative) than others.

And martial law was always on the table. If he's gonna do it he's gonna do it regardless of the number or size of the protests. Just because the oppressor might oppress is no reason to retire a tool in your arsenal and not protest the oppression.
