That's not to say there's not plenty of other stuff they can pull to suppress the vote, but it seems like winning 50 states through inside fixes would be unlikely

Yes. You are correct, the states run their own elections. And I think even Roberts has been reluctant to intrude on state rules for their elections? Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.
I'd nitpick your phrasing here, in that I'd say that Roberts has spent his entire career doing everything in his power to gut the 1964 Civil Rights Act that gave the feds some influence in state elections because he is, in his heart of hearts, a segregationist neoconfederate to his goddamn bones.
oh yeah, I'm just quibbling over the phrasing "even Roberts," implying that this isn't a position one would expect.
my point is, since the strongest & broadest federal powers over elections are Civil Rights Act related, Roberts' passion for unrestricted state power in elections makes more sense.

they did some bullshit "not indicted or convicted" thing, right?
And I agree, he's a segregationist, I just thought I had read that he didn't want to be *seen* as a segregationist. Despite the VRA gutting.
