Because we threaten patriarchy. Non-cishet people (who all do not conform to gender roles by existing) show that there are more possibilities, women can be independent and anyone can dress how they want and there’s no shame in sexual contact for fun rather than reproduction.
Their worlds are tiny and based upon rock-solid beliefs: The Bible is perfect. Mom and Dad are/were saints. Family has always been a mom and dad and three kids in a house.
Suggesting something outside of their worldview threatens their very identity. Ignorance is bliss until reality comes knocking.
They cling very tightly to a rigid set of schema. Combine that with the primal urge to identify things as quickly as possible without any education on how to restrain that instinct, and you have the basic recipe for the current phenomenon.
Eugenics is the thing linking the concerns others have accurately shared about how "gender critical" thinking is at base about reproductive coercion and racism. It was utterly mainstream in the early 20th century but we never fully unpacked that when the Nazis were defeated before, hence it returns.
But it makes more sense when you look at how Christofascist dark money has promoted the growth of TERFism in the UK. For me, the thing I struggle to get my head around is feminists giving the time of day to right wing Christians, but I can only assume "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" illogic.
White supremacy. Anybody who isn't doing everything they can to create as many white babies as possible is seen as a threat. Racism is at the very heart of all of it.

Addressing gender differently, sometimes makes them feel like their world view is threatened.
Most people don't want to adjust their worldview, so they find a way to avoid it 🤷
