Nobody who advocates mandatory drug treatment is prepared to advocate for more drug treatment centres and sufficient staff. Cannot possibly have one without the other. We don't have enough treatment beds for those who want treatment, let alone those who might be forced into it.

If a person isn’t ready to deal with their addiction then mandatory addictions treatment isn’t going to stick. Relapse rates will be virtually 100%.

Deal with the issues making people prone to addiction. Mental health supports and poverty need to be addressed not reactionary measures.

They really need controlled substance management. Coming out of an addiction is not a question of willpower. It is a question of long mental and pharmacological treatments. As a society, we need to be ok with providing that to people facing addictions, otherwise we are only risking their lives.

I’m going to yell this until my voice goes but coerced addiction treatment is barbaric and does not work. Addiction is not a moral failure, it is a multifaceted disease requiring medical and mental health treatment and a willing patient’s participation. Poilievre is misguided, ill informed & a dick.

When I learned the science of how addictions work, I started feeling more empathy for people facing addiction. They truly are the most vulerable among us.

We need people in government who understand or are willing to learn science. We don't need willful ignorants like the CPC.

Agreed. You can't make someone unaddicted. Believe me, no addict wakes up saying they want to be addicted to their drug of choice. Only when they are ready, can the work being. There is NO cure. Addiction is about medicating emotional pain.
