Key findings: 1) the number of wolf packs is a good approximation of the effective size. 2)LD based methods are very sensitive to sampling design and spatial genetic structure. Kinship-based methods are not sensitive to spatial genetic structure, but do require random sampling.

Compare this to how we view the Ne>500 threshold when we, humans, are involved: We were "nearly extinct" because our ancestors went through a bottleneck of Ne=1280. It should remind us that Ne>500 is really the bare minimum, and is not a good middle-of-the-road conservation goal.

Key findings: 3) Many of the European wolf populations have too low Ne to be considered genetically safe (Ne>500), especially the Scandinavian population.
