Torn between my serious adult take on Trump/Canada (it's a stupid story) and my Civ V nerd take (okay, if you want to break Canada into states, first you need to merge the Atlantic Canada provinces)

If you’re doing the thought experiment, there’s really no reason for Montana, Wyoming and Idaho to be separate states and the Dakotas should be merged. (The point being then nothing is off the table. Agreed that it’s a stupid story.)
Even Alberta would have voted for Harris by a greater margin than Vermont. In pre election surveys, it was a close run thing for him to even get a plurality of Conservative party voters.
I agree, it's a stupid story. It's painful for me bc I'm the rare American politics guy who follows Canada closely and knows a decent amount about its politics - the "huh huh Governor Trudeau" stuff drove me insane
Yeah I’m aware of that. Joe Clark lasted not much longer, but no lol there. And Turner took the worst election beating of all of them after less than a year, so no lol there either.
Ironically, what happened today increased their chances, and remember that they don't necessarily need to win the majority, or even a plurality of the seats, to stay in government.
Don't know if the possibility of the Conservatives selling us out will be enough to hold a coalition together to prevent them from forming the next government, but it may happen with enough concessions to the NDP and the Bloc. https://bsky.app/profile/waynechow.bsky.social/post/3lf3znitzls2m
Why? We don’t need a conservative government negotiating with Trump any sooner than necessary. Next Lib leader will be obliterated at the ballot and is taking on a 4 year re-invention project.
Ms. May's offer seems like a win-win-win: Canada more than doubles in population, we get a sensible healthcare system, and Trump gets to skew the Electoral College in his favor.
100% will take Tim Horton's for breakfast.
Sorry, New England, but maybe you can cut your own deal.
It really does feel like that point in the game when the map is all explored and you’re nearing the end of the tech tree, going, hmm, we’ve got no good spots left for new cities, I guess we’ll conquer a couple neighbors
One big problem with the idea of annexing Canada is…. Quebec! They have their own legal system (based on the Napoleonic Code), their own immigration system, and a French speaking majority population. And then there’s the federal matter of the land treaties that would be open to renegotiation!
Louisiana iirc is still based somewhat in napoleonic code. I know it’s super weird and bizarre for how a state(or commonwealth for those special places) operate
The reason in my head that Trump won't effectively do any of this shit to anyone is that the US economy relies on Mexico for cheap labour, China for cheap manufacturing and Canada for cheap resources. Greenland...maybe? Panama... probably? Gulf of America, sure bud all yours.
But you’re actually putting energy into this as if it’s real. All he’s trying to do is annoy Canadians (a shockingly easy thing to do) and weaken the liberals to help Pierre. He knows if thr conservatives win a big majority it means better tariff deals for him and his stupid cronies.
it's a testament to the sorry state of journalism today that nobody is running with the Crusader Kings 3 nerd take (Canada can be brought peacefully into the realm through marriage if Barron Trump is betrothed to Ella-Grace Trudeau)
We'd have to settle debates over poutine vs. hamburgers, caribou vs. bald eagles, and hockey vs. football. Let's keep maple syrup and healthcare separate, eh?
It's meant to be a joke that puts Trump and King Charles on a collision course, but the Governor General of Canada is appointed by the Sovereign (King Charles III at the moment) and that person can dissolve the Canadian parliament with advice from the PM and Cabinet.
Realistically, Canada would be more than 1 state. Dems can't miss this opportunity to make up ground in the Senate. There should be at least 4 states there.

Maritimes: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI
Atlantic Provinces: the above three plus Newfoundland & Labrador.
ME, VT and NH join Canada's NFLD, NS, NB and PEI in the east while in the west, CA, OR and WA join BC. We would take NY, MA and NJ if needed.
In the middle AB, SASK join MT and ND to become part of the US.
Win win. The US get rid of their Dems and Canada gets rid of its Cons.
Greater Alaska Project good
Why not merge the Dakota’s , Carolina’s ?
Seems awful arbitrary to just start lumping provinces together.
I hate this new state already
Trudeau, Harper, Martin, Chrétien, Campbell (lol), Mulroney, Turner, P.E. Trudeau, Clark, P.E. Trudeau, Pearson, Diefenbaker
And Clark’s government fell because he couldn’t count, which is kinda funny too.
Turner - 80
Campbell - 133
Turner - 40
Campbell - 2
And I'm old enough to remember 11 of them personally.
(So mean: "Campbell (lol)" 😆 )

best of the good, but not great

As a Canadian I will NEVER yield to that abomination of a man.
Over my cold dead body is the only way he'd step over me.
I think it's very awake.
It’s shockingly easy to troll Canadians (and kind of funny to do) but his obvious goal is to weaken the libs and help Pierre take power.
