I'd be 100% fine with a platform that has zero moderation outside of speech that breaks the law-- but only if there was zero anonymity. Link a government ID, use your real name and let everyone know exactly who is saying what.

Before the internet, we didn't have this world where people could engage in the most insane behavior without social consequences. If you wanted to spout vile shit, everyone knew who you were. Now people can let insane ideas fly and feel no meaningful negative feedback.

The feedback to disagreeable speech should take on of two forms, you either ignore it or you counter rhetorically. Neither of these require real ID, the only kind of solution that would really need that is IRL harassment to scare them out of it, which hopefully we can agree is bad.

I feel like the steelman argument here for real ID is that it allows us to better identify when people are saying a certain thing because they have a vested interest in it.

I just am unconvinced that benefit is worth the loss of anonymity.

I think the other problem is bots. There are bot farms set up for the sole purpose of inflaming both ends of political discourse. I'd love to have engaging political conversations with people, but half the time I can't help think that they're just some chatbot designed to make me angry.

Or if they aren't bots, I want to know they're at least American and not some Eurotrash butting into my nation's discourse. Something so there is some social accountability that I know to some degree that I'm talking to a real person with a real vested interest in the topic.

As for social media I think there needs to be some form of repercussion for behavior that would never fly in person. If you go around calling people the n-word behind the handle of joeschmoe12345 then the only negative effect that can happen is your account gets banned. Then you make a new one.

In person (I used to say in real life, but social media IS real life now) you feel the social stigma when you act like a garbage human being. No one will want to hang out with you if you're a nazi or a tankie or just shout the N word at people.
