It started to become relevant around the time Skype really started to crash and burn, and also offered a chat experience somewhat more along the lines of pre-Skype IM platforms. The whole stickers thing came around a while after Telegram started to get traction with furries, IIRC.

So, this article doesn't talk about how it's actually implemented. Grok is on there as a paid bot you can message, that's it. Anyone can set up a paid bot, so it's likely that it was just set up by someone at X. It's not scraping messages or anything like that

(Unfortunately, Signal still requires a smartphone. From what I understand, Telegram can be linked to a landline number and then used on a desktop PC

That's why I still use Telegram to coordinate one of my RPG groups, in a Telegram group chat, because one of my players doesn't want a mobile phone)

It’s just a paid bot you can send messages to that someone from X probably set up. Anyone can do this, I highly doubt this was implemented by Telegram themselves. It’s really not that big a deal.
