exactly, and even if you need it for something, just hook up a box, because the guys in a “smart” tv are low spec and are outdated within a few years anyways, if not right out of the box
This is so true about almost any smart device. Your fridge probably doesn't get a lot of updates and probably has many bug left unpatched as well. These devices just get abandoned by the manufacturers.
I mean it can still be a regular TV even if you don't connect it to the Internet ever, but at the very least, you can update its software if you do connect it to the Internet.
Here's one some of you may not know about:
NBC runs ads for their other shows by the announcer saying "[digital assistant] remind me to watch 💩" My iPad hears that and obeys.
Since digital bugs are everywhere now, & hackers can do interesting things, imagine you've got your whole house hooked up.
Regarding operating systems, basically TVs are now web browsers. Except instead of using one standard, every goddamn streamer uses some different setup meaning you have to search to hell and back to find shows.
I think with the old dumb ones, l'd rather use an external computing device I control.
Needing an operating system and apps for each thing you want to watch, greatly enhances their ability to charge you money, and raise the rates to gouge you anytime they wish.
The obsolescence is of course icing on the cake. There is a fine line between needing digital processors and needing an OS.
One thing you can still do is receive programming over the air using an antenna..The market I'm in back in the 1960s had about four networks. With digital TVs, I can get about 30 networks over the air when cable/net are DOA.
Once a new network system becomes available here my cable is gone bye-bye.

Smart in being a nightmare for privacy AND security once manufacturers decided it's obsolete and its OS isn't worth updating anymore.
Though I'd tolerate a TV running a Linux/*BSD distro. That I can update & reprogram to be awesome than a regular TV at least.
