In summer, ancient Chinese homes burned agarwood to ease the heat and dampness. The literati of the Song Dynasty (960–1279) especially prized Hainan’s variety—cool, sweet, and clean like lotus and plum blossoms. Fan Chengda wrote that its scent, touched with pear-like freshness, could fill a room.
