These are hardly sleepy little hobbits. They are prepared to take up arms to defend their homes, families, and friends. It makes so much sense that Merry is a Brandybuck. He’s not only insightful but one for action. 2/2

I was reading the books this week as well. Tolkien has many characters talk about keeping going even in the face of loss. Galadriel at one point says they are fighting the long defeat.

To be fair, the Tooks also have their own claim to fame, since one of their ancestors was Bandobras Took, aka The Bullroarer, who famously led the charge against a goblin invasion and defeated their leader, Golfimbul.
(Thus inventing the game of golf, because Tolkien was a very serious writer!)

If you look at the Prologue, Tolkien does describe the Hobbits as complacent in the outside but hardy on the inside. And he does point to the Toons and Brandybucks as different (Brandybucks are queer in his own words). I guess living by the Old Forest does not allow one to be too complacent.
