LFC extending Salah has the same vibe to me.
Great player clearly, but that was then, not in two years time. The slope of decline starts out so gentle that it is imperceptible - yet it steepens as time goes on.

Plainly, there are individuals who can hold off this natural decline, but not forever. If Asensio is cheap enough I can see the case for signing him - but not if his signing blocks the acquisition of a more mobile 10, as mobility and pace are requirements in the modern game ...

It can seem mad not to buy quality today, but better quality tomorrow is the strategy in any forward looking business. Villa need touch, control, vision, and pace, and they need those qualities all in individual players - not spread out among the team.
Unlike some, we don't have money to burn.

My biggest fear for this team actually revolves around our loan crew as well….saying they go we are left with a decent size hole in the squads quality….its a real catch 22 for the club as you pointed out…

It is about scouting then courage.
To go for youth before it has shown its value is bold.
Villa are not Man Utd or PSG or Chelsea - we cannot spend then spend again because our revenues are not at that level.
For me, talent and promise is worth the risk over high cost history.

And we have signed a lot of young players under emery - garcia, maatsen, onana, rogers, ned, ozcan, enzo, SIJ etc but I think Emery will has always wanted a sprinkling of older players in all of his teams. He clearly values experience.

Yes, but Maatsen and Onana were hardly bargain picks - and the maximising of available budget is where we should be looking more than stardust signings in my opinion. Garcia looks a proper player - more like him would be great 👍

I don't disagree but that strategy usually requires patience which our owners do not have. The balance of building for the future while also having a team capable of fighting for CL places is where we are. Its the reason Bournemouth and brighton are currently 8/9 point below us.

It's a fair point Son but what PSG have are young but still elite talents. If you can afford 11 young elite talents then great, if not then a balance of young and older but closer to elite is probably the only way. I think asensio is worth the punt. Marcus, not so much.

Yeah I kind of feel the same. Both players have added to us since Jan, and Asensio has obviously been amazing, but not sure either solve problems that the team has.

Talent like that is usually snapped up very young and protected.
