I remember not liking what I perceived as her "post-modernism" in college, but since then I've grown to respect her and her work a lot more. She called out gender determinism before people were even taking it to the extremes they are now.

While slotted in the "high theory" category in the US, Butler has for a decade or two been a lightning rod for reactionaries around the world e.g. France and Brazil, who like to position critique of their gender politics as US cultural imperialism.

So my impression is Butler has developed a global audience and gotten very good at speaking to it. Plus we've reached a point, alas, which is well suited to their analytical frame.

The reaction in the US had a lot to do with academic politics and disciplinary authority.
