My husband’s niece (17 years old) is getting a record player for Christmas from her mom so we are getting her two records. It’s definitely not as common anymore but it’s still happening.

Yes, it’s available, but now it’s an afficionado market. Before you buy someone a CD you must be sure if the person has a player. Years ago this was as certain as it is today that you can count on anyone having a cell phone.

My best friend and I are always finding stuff that we love from our personal collections and gifting each other. Plenty of stuff I can find that he doesn’t have the time to find on his own and vice versa. And my concert buddy would always get tickets to a show for
Christmas-that’s a no brainer.

Digital music has changed the vessel that music used to be delivered in. There used to be a presentation with the music you were intaking that was just as much part of the package.

Yes, music lessons can be a nice gift. But it isn’t help if, for example, your gradma wants to listen to the new album of Dudamel or as a nice souvenir for a first date (what could be wrong after a first romantic dinner someone gifted its crush with a voucher harmonica course? 😅)

I know. And I believe in physical media and despise streaming's costs (at many levels). But--in fairness--we had around many, many centuries in which music was made, not captured as object. Anything we can do to facilitate the re-adoption of music as a practice, as well as object, helps everyone.

Agreed. But the point is: music as a gift is no longer a social or emotional code. Sound devices with LP or CD players aren’t popular. It’s a very rare opportunity suprising someone by unwrapping a “piece of music”!

All I ever ask for at Xmas or birthdays are vinyls. It's sad that people would rather use digital platforms, but convenience is the curse of our modern world. Spotify has its place, but physical media won't die as long as people like us are there to buy it and support the industry!
