Why does every affirmation for women and girls end with telling them they’re “beautiful?” Not “wonderful” or “fantastic” or “admirable” or “exceptional,” always beautiful.
I do. I don’t think there’s many affirmations for men that end with “you’re beautiful if you do x,y,and z.” For men, the goal is to be “strong” or “a real man” or a “good father.” But when it comes to describing women, it all comes down to beauty—internal or external—but it’s always beauty.
you make a great point. I'll stop using it. I tell both my granddaughters and grandsons that they're beautiful. Because they are. I can see the sexism in this post however.
I think it’s lovely that you tell them both that they’re beautiful. You’re a lovely grandma, I’m sure! And we all *are* beautiful—made in God’s image, who could argue with that? My only concern is when it’s exclusively applied to girls/women. And thanks so much for engaging in a good chat.
Thanks Madame DeFarge! I have those same concerns. Patriarchy is so deeply engrained in our society that much of it seems normal. I find myself falling down that hole once in awhile, even though, I look for it always đź’ś

Women are not the problem.
The problem is men with guns.
