Twitch announces they are categorizing the term ‘Zionist’ as a potential slur as part of their Hateful Conduct Policy:

“Using the term ‘Zionist’ to attack or demean another individual or group of people on the basis of their background or religious belief is against our rules.”

Ultimately Zionist is simply not a slur and Twitch is not going to be able to effectively capture or respond to the nuances of how people might use the term. Banning it in any capacity targets, restricts and polices political speech from oppressed people and allies, regardless of stated intent

The policy likely exists because of recent controversy surrounding some popular streamers. I might not agree with this style of moderation, but keep in mind that terms can - are often - used to dog whistle.

Having a set definition makes it easier to decide what usage does and doesn’t count as a slur. People just throw around terms these days, as if “feminism” or “wokeness” or “true Scotsman” are somehow magically immune to different interpretations.
