This doesn’t just lead to poor management of pain it can increase morbidity and sadly sometimes be fatal. The ‘downgrading’ of women’s pain leads to delay in recognising serious diagnoses. Just as in policing and the justice system we have to start believing women.

A new study in PNAS (N>20k) confirms women’s pain is taken less seriously than that of men, with women being less likely to receive pain meds and waiting 30 minutes longer to be seen in the ED.
Sadly, the same reasons we treat women poorly in our society translate to how we treat women patients.
