I'm working on poetry submissions. I have client work sporadically throughout the month, but I do plan to knock off work early this month. You? #freelancechat
My only project this month (unless something else pops up) is a super fun feature article for Emmy about a new show that doesn't premiere on Netflix until spring. I got to see the first two episodes. Next week I interview the cast and creator. #FreelanceChat
It usually is. But I also just wrapped lots of very short entires for several annual listings for a couple different clients. Those aren't fun, but they keep the income flowing. #FreelanceChat
I've got several big projects wrapping up that won't get paid until Jan/Feb, so that's giving me a little bit of a cushion. If work shows up I'll take it, but I'm not freaking out as much as usual. Gonna be a grinchy Christmas though. #FreelanceChat
Yeah, I'm trying to set up my schedule next year for more in early fall (although I have to take off 1-3 weeks for a different project), and then not have to worry from Thanksgiving - year end. Here's hoping! #FreelanceChat
Nice! I have that on my schedule for tomorrow. And this weekend I want to spend some time reaching out to people I haven't worked with yet. #FreelanceChat
I took all of December off last year, and I actually DIDN'T have a great time (got bored). This year, I'm gonna keep working most of the month but also spend some time planning/strategizing for 2025. #FreelanceChat
I typically work the first half of the month, then take the last two weeks off. (And if possible, maybe the first few days of the new year.) #FreelanceChat
I usually visit my mom for a month every fall. She has no internet service and I can't get data out there. I have to drive into town where the coffee shops only let you use wifi for 20 minutes before the password changes. #FreelanceChat
It worked out great with projects wrapping up last year, but the time off was too unstructured and I got antsy! If I did it again, I would plan it around travel or other specific hobbies/activities rather than just down time. #FreelanceChat
I have a few projects where I'm waiting on approvals, so it gives me an excuse to slow down a little before the holidays. I always find it a little rough to go from really busy to vacation mode.
I WISH I could take vacay early, but the last few months were lean. I have a paid trial piece for a potential long-term ghostwriting gig, script analyst work (I hope, if more comes in), book review work, my own deadlines, plus I'm a judge for a Scholastic contest. #FreelanceChat
I've got two more proposals, two newsletters to wrap up, some social messages to finish and a paid social campaign to monitor, but as those things close, I start closing down.
I'm taking 2 weeks off (Dec 21-Jan 5) and I'm hoping to slowly close up starting the week of the 15th. #FreelanceChat
I usually do, every year. A bunch of clients also are closed this time of year (I'd say half are "officially" closed, a quarter have limited staff/hours and the others slow) so it's the easiest time for me to close up shop.
Same. But my other philosophy is "I'm not an employee" so I also take time off when they don't, but with my kids home and in the haze of "what day is it I don't know let me eat some cheese at 10 am" it's the best time to take off. ;)
I guess I am, too. Yesterday, a client paused a project ("for a couple of weeks"), but we know how that goes. I'm feeling conflicted about it. #freelancechat
UGGGHHHH. That has happened more often this year than in all of the other years (and there's a lot of them) of my writing career combined. #FreelanceChat
It's not ideal. It's not the end of the world. But it's not ideal. It was supposed to be an easy thing I could knock out next week and he's a prompt payer. #Freelancechat
So this is my busy time of year. My whole bandwidth relies on 1) people briefing projects early in the month and then 2) going away and leaving me alone to work. I can get A LOT OF THINGS DONE when the noise dies down. #FreelanceChat
