While I'm on the topic of cultural differences, there is another one that I still can't emotionally comprehend. I get it logically, but each time it happens I feel like I get emotional damage.

When I bake/cook too much, I offer some to neighbours. Np, I don't logically expect anything back. But I'm so used to the plate coming back at least with something small on it (idk, candy, or a note, whatever), when it comes back empty I feel so awkward? Like wow??? How???
When I explained it to some colleagues at first they didn't get it. "What's the punchline?" They asked. That's it, the empty plate back is the punchline. But again, in their culture you also bake your own birthday cake on your birthday, which is still bizarre to me after all those years.
