I don't think it's ever been closer to 18 outside of famines or endemic malnourishment. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24721149/ has a chart going back to 1939 for age for the US. It seems unlikely that average age would have dropped by 5 or 6 years in a few decades.
