The Fort Knox conspiracy theory seems to have begun with this exchange on X. 2 days later Fox ran a segment about it. A few days after that Trump began bringing it up w reporters. Hard to overstate how much influence posters on a far-right forum have over the national conversation right now

What does it matter if it is there or not? It might as well be on the moon. Putting gold in a fort and putting a lot of resources in guarding it seems a lot more like a superstition than a useful input into production.

I think a big part of it is the simple fact that as Trumps senility has advanced and he loses what little abstract reasoning skills he had, the economy is way too complicated for him to talk about but a big pile of gold is easy to wrap his mind around.
