Dear city staff tasked with improving your downtown environment for struggling small businesses.
PR campaigns, “Love [insert city here]” are pointless window-dressing.
1) Get (qualified) officers on the street.
-Stop aggressive panhandling.
-Fix safety issues, real or perceived.

Comments
-fund outdoor spaces (AND SEATING) to gather w/out direct cost. Seed w/ small pop ups via carts, trucks, stalls.
-small is fine. Lots of little “piazzas” let you find what works iteratively at low cost. Avoid overprogramming.
-get self-educated on obstacles, examples to bypass them re: street design. Design for ~people~.
-spend money on PUBLIC improvements, not rent abatements.
-relentlessly ask “how could this block be made cooler to walk, sit, or shop along”.
-tie every goal to growing the # of people on your sidewalks and in your public spaces.
-tie that to financial success for businesses and city revenues.
Repeat.
