If you ask me this is mere eye wash. I’m sure the scholars that would use these journals would rather want a decent fellowship paid out in timely manner.

In the current system, I think this is a helpful move by the govt. which will eliminate access inequity for many Indian scientists. 2/

It's definitely a short term positive for Indian scientists. But I think it's a bad move for science in general for the long term. It further entrenches science into the iron grip of big for profit publishing houses. 3/

Countries like the US need to lead on revolutionizing science publishing making especially govt. funded science truly accessible to all without siphoning huge amounts of funds into for profit publishing houses. 4/

Not only are we bleeding ourselves, but we are effectively forcing other countries to pay these huge sums to these publishers to access our research through these highway robbery journals. 5/

An easy first step is to just preprint everything + use them as a true publishing system ie. release everything with preprints (data, code, models, resources etc). 6/

The other steps are more complicated. The US academic system needs to start abandoning the 3 random reviewer culture of peer review + utilize post preprint review platforms + eliminate journal labels & bean counting as status symbols. 7/
