Sifu is a very special experience. Getting a complete run of every stage and beating the final boss in one smooth run is one of the most satisfying experiences I've had in video games.
Accurate. I have memories embedded from certain areas. Museum fights, first hallway fight and how the game is like a perfectly choreographed action film when moves are nailed just right. 5/5 all time banger
Unfortunately Yang really requires parrying. It takes a while to learn his patterns, but once you do parrying will chip away his strucure pretty quick. Also for his annoying second phase rush attack, dodge low three times.
The post-launch addition of an easy mode is the best way to approach intentionally difficult games like this, imo. Some will try it anyway, regardless of reported difficulty, because they are attracted to the setting/art style. They might persevere, gaining new levels of determination and focus <3
...but then those who bounce off of it or decided not to buy it for fear of learning parry focused combat will both have reasons to dive in and everyone wins!
Explain because I genuinely dont understand. I haven't played it but it looks like just a Yakuza style brawler with the only gimmick being the age thing. Nothing about it appeals to me and I want to find a reason to like it.
Okay I said Yakuza because I meant in terms of the beat em up gameplay. I just genuinely don't understand what makes the game that amazing because every gameplay video I see just seems like generic beat em up. I want to understand why people like it and I just don't right now.
I really wanted to like it, but it was too challenging for me. My patience run out after 1 hour. I’m going to give it another shot when I’m in more receptible state.
I never finished it but loved it. However just bought a new car so no money for new games, probably ever! Time to go through my back catalogue and this will be up there as one of the 1st I'll play/finish.
It's a great game, definitely worth a proper full playthrough, I had a break from it because of it's difficulty, either that or I'm just rubbish at video games.
Makes sense. It is DRIPPING with style and love for the genre, has complex skill-based gameplay that rides the line of fun and frustration as you play and get better, and makes you want to turn around and immediately play it again when you beat it. Also speed runs of Sifu are WILD to watch.
I started it and only made it through one life. idk, it just wasn't for me but I can certainly see the appeal. I might try again, but it's hard for me to get into rogue like games.
If you like SIFU, try "En Garde!" Some of the same people worked on both games.
Imagine SIFU but inspired by old swashbuckling movies instead of kung fu flicks. Then take away some of the combat's complexity but add wayyyy more focus on movement and use of the environment! https://youtu.be/9_7UsZas35s
I really want to love that game but I’m dreadful with the controls, it’s like the Street Fighter games and I was terrible at them as well, just can’t pull off certain moves, I might revisit!! I’m clearly turning into a cozy gamer!!
It's so weird. I wanted to like it. I just didn't like the controls and was sooo very bad at it. I didn't have fun, but I wanted to ask I heard so many good things from people including you at the time.
Sifu is one of those games like Return of the Obra Dinn and The Outer Wilds where there just isn’t a replacement once you’ve finished it. I now have a Sifu shaped hole in my heart and nothing else can quite fill it the same.
Love but am not in love with Tunic! I ended up like Death’s Door of that years’ Zelda-riffs more but that’s just my preference towards movement and “more button presses please”. Genuine thought though: if we’re calling Metroidvanias “Search Action” games now, are Zelda games Search Action games?
Yes! I don’t think I ever figured out the big door near the end of the manual. I did catch myself smiling and saying “oh, fuck you” out loud (to no one) at most of the secrets though. It’s genuinely special, I just didn’t love the actual game feel compared to some and I tend to value that highly.
Door at the end is the thing that puts Tunic above Death’s Door for me (and you actually didn’t finish Tunic if you didn’t do it!). That said, totally fair. I love it but to each their own.
I second and third that sentiment. There’s something so rewarding about progressing your skill with the game, and when I realized I’d gone from just button mashing to strategically planning which moves to use and when, it had me hooked.

Really hoping the next game gives us free move customization. More particularly, more grappling. Not enough grappling in gaming.
Essentially he has certain moves that need to be parried and others that must be dodged, and he mixes them up.
He will punish you for perfectly timing a dodge/parry if you only rely on one or the other, you have to use both correctly.
Unfortunately Yang really requires parrying. It takes a while to learn his patterns, but once you do parrying will chip away his strucure pretty quick. Also for his annoying second phase rush attack, dodge low three times.
I think it's only going to look better to people over time.
Beat Sean yesterday at age 20. After failing multiple times.
Love the dopamine rush.
Got my ass beaten, ill try again later
Got my ass beaten, uninstalled
Ill give it another try at some point surely…..
