The year is 1840. For context, this is 20 years before the Civil War. There are 2 political parties. The WHIGS, a big-tent semi-progressive party full of people who were anti slavery. And their opposition, the DEMOCRATS. Democrats were pro-slavery, pro-expansionist, and explicitly white supremacist.

The funny thing is that morons like Dinesh D'Souza use the Republican Party of 1860 to justify that the Republican Party of 2024 is somehow progressive and equal. The real issue is that the people in those parties shape the platforms, and two big movements helped create the modern climate.

The first was that Reconstruction, brief as it was, caused a schism in the Democratic Party between hard-line racists who wanted to enforce segregation laws in the South (Southern Democrats) and more moderate Democrats in the North that waffled on what to do with freed African Americans.

And the second happened a century later where those Southern Democrats, scorned by the Civil Rights Movement, moved to the Republican Party thanks to Barry Goldwater's Southern Strategy, effectively killing off any remaining "liberal Republicans" that kept the group somewhere in the middle.

In the 1848 election, the Whigs nominate a moderate, Zachary Taylor, with the strategic goal of appealing to a broader electorate. And he actually wins the presidency! Cool!

Now, there were technically 4 presidents associated with the Whig Party. None of them served a full term in office due to dying of illnesses. Zachary Taylor served 16 months in office, dying in 1850. With his Vice President finishing his term to 1853.

By the election in 1852, The Whigs have lost control of EVERYTHING. The Democrats win the presidency in a landslide, as well as both the House and Senate.

This collapse is largely attributed to the Whigs continual capitulation and compromise with the Democrats. (Are we starting to see the parallels to what’s happening today?)

These compromises included things such as allowing Texas to be a slave state, as long as California could remain free. And allowing the Fugitive Slave Act to pass, as long as the slave trade stopped in DC, etc..

Each time losing more than they gained for the purpose of “compromise.”
