There was no panic about ethics in game journalism, there was a panic about women and minorities, which hid behind fake concerns about ethics in games journalism while ignoring the *actual* ethical problems in games and games journalism.
It was wild watching it being treated like a legitimate thing in some corners when here I thought we all knew full well that "games journalism" is just paid advertising and always has been. Were they longing for the days of haughty journalistic ideals in EGM or something? Fucking insane.
Oh and then it turned out that the whole thing was "gamers" being misogynist freaks about one specific developer and for some reason that part never really made it to the news.
