Starbucks reached the milestone of 2,000 stores in Japan yesterday. It's in Ginza, the same area as the first store the coffee chain opened in 1996.

When I came to Japan 20 years ago, they were closing stores. I wonder what turned it around.

They always closed unprofitable stores, while still keeping the total ticking up. Local partner Sazaby sold its stake over ten years ago, and the US parent has had full control of strategy since.
