A good deal of English language coverage has depicted the dispute as an example of establishment pressure censoring an important story. However, many of those who have been critical of Ito in this matter are her former lawyers, and media allies.

Tamaka Ogawa, a journalist with a focus on sexual violence, has been openly frustrated with Ito's stance. Ogawa sat through the court proceedings, knows Ito personally, and they share several mutual friends. In short, Ogawa doesn't buy Ito's public interest defence. Ogawa feels the disputed footage adds drama to the documentary but misrepresents the narrative of the trial. For instance, she notes that audio of the taxi driver is used but he was never called to testify in court.

Until yesterday's decision to re-edit, Ito's position was that the film should be released in the same form it has been shown overseas, and the public should decide. Her former allies thought this showed a disregard for the rights of others.

In some respects, the stubborness Shiori Ito showed during this dispute over unauthorized footage may well be the very character trait which gave her the drive to pursue her sexual assault case. The litigation took years, and made her the target for numerous public attacks.
