The argument went all the way to the Supreme Court. Most courts sided with JASRAC, and found the schools liable to pay. They followed the "karaoke doctrine", set by a case in 1988. As karaoke bars made money from playing songs, a court had ruled they were obliged to pay JASRAC.

Judges generally ruled that schools made money, so they should also pay. Both JASRAC and the schools hated this decision, and both appealed. In October 2022, the Supreme Court rejected JASRAC's appeal, and declined to hear the schools' appeal. The Supreme Court ruling didn't elucidate what the schools should pay. Effectively, the two disputants were left to hash it out themselves. JASRAC originally wanted 2.5% of all school tuition revenue, so the final result is financially less burdensome for the schools.
