Also if you don't already have one get a rotary cutter and ruler it makes cutting strips much easier and more accurate. I think this pattern has originally been designed for jelly roll strips hence the lack of direction in instructions .
Your fabric most likely to be 44 inches wide. So I'd cut my strips across the width then cut down from there . I'd start with the smallest and work up. You can piece together a bigger piece from left overs if you run out .
First question is what it the width of your fabric? That will help with the break down. Then you can work out blocks of strips. I'd just do whole width of fabric 2 1/2" stripes and then it's a bit more maths. (Sorry)
I suppose I can pick 12 strips at random and cut the largest size, then the next size down .. but what if I run out of fabric before I get to the tiny bits and I have like lots of 2" pieces left when I actually need 2.5" pieces?
Alas maths is not on speaking terms with me after I failed learning times tables by heart. I go with Trust the process and use fabric marker before cutting. Or even calico test fabric to cut and sew to prove it works. Good luck
