I think if one reads about the post WW2 activities of Russian assets such as Harry Dexter White, they were motivated to believe they could establish a 2 superpower supremacy Russia-USA, at the expense of the defeated powers, central Europe and Britain/France. TBH I think that's where we may be.

Given he tried to overturn his previous loss, and his attitude to laws generally, I don't believe he's going to allow a free and fair vote he thinks he might lose.

Outright cancelling would be hard to spin, but would take a tide against him to overcome the rigging to be expected. Orban in Hungary.

Autocracies still need a support base, or compliance. Easier to fix an election than nakedly cancel one. Though outright cancelling ("temporary postponement due to crisis X") is an option, it'll upset more people.

It’s 3! Almost certainly. He’s been fixated on Putin for decades, uncharacteristically deferential. He also seeks revenge on Zelenskyy, from whom he couldn’t extort a corrupt “dirt on Biden” deal in 2019, and who “upstaged” him at the Notre Dame ceremony last year, where he got a standing ovation.
