It’s one of the ways that we again see the country’s founding institutions are completely broken. Partly this is because we used to ask presidents to be serious people (hi Reagan), that would seriously take the country’s national interests to heart. This is totally broken 4 year fixed terms is bad.

Yes, the failure modes for parliamentary systems are more graceful where Madisonian systems tend to fail by autogolpe, but a majority party being lockstep opposed to democracy top to bottom is going to pose problems no matter what.

The thing is that there’s no constitutional solution for not just a bad executive but a whole bad administration all the way down the line of succession, backed by a whole bad political party. The thing is that there can’t be.

Yep. At core, any democratic system relies on the people to be the ultimate backstop against electing villains. We done fucked that up.

There are constitutional systems that lead to coalitions instead of two adversarial parties, and “the governing coalition immediately collapses due to the biggest party’s thorough incompetence/malfeasance” is absolutely a designed response.
