There are a ton of folks that have no business teaching. Then there are people who are skilled in what they do AND have the pedagogical and teaching skills to convey information. I am the latter.
If you thought landing a journalism job today is hard try getting one in an industry where they can’t tell the difference btwn a PhD and a masters holding prof of practice.
For context I have been teaching longer than I’ve been a journalist - more than 2 decades. I have taught in Spain, South Korea, New York U, Princeton U, City U of NY, and private programs for elite places like the New York Times and City Limits
In a nutshell - if there’s one thing I can do it’s teach. From high school to graduate school and adult learners I can teach. From non English speakers to degree holding career changers I can teach. And I also have the credentials.
Alas … academia is in free fall. And it’s only taking with it people it likes? Or have phds? Or are cool? I can’t tell you with authority bc there is absolutely no reasoning behind these secret decisions made by committees behind closed doors.
What I can say confidently is that this is no longer about skill. Getting a job in academia as a non PhD means 1. You are an underpaid adjunct with few rights that can be terminated at any time 2. You are a celebrity the school wants so they can get money 3. They like you
