I’ve watched a lot of libs on this platform talk about how we need to do right by wildfire victims and offer them coverage. But I think this really, really needs to be emphasized:

This is not sustainable. The state does not have enough money to cover property owners

Something to the effect of "if private insurance drops you, the state will buy your house for some discount of its value—or you can stay in it and you get ~nothing if it burns."

These locations need to be emptied preemptively, not only when the fire comes.

Yes, I know that ppl will lose equity, that new housing in CA is too scarce, etc. This has been foreseeable for decades, the time to handle it with minimal pain was the past, and now all of the options involve pain.

I agree. And this does need to be a discussion of the current catastrophe - many of these homes are insurable but not a lot of the Palisades. But man am I not in an emotonal place to have this discussion without being steaming mad very quickly.

We're not going to. Climate change inequality is here. Certain hoods will be rebuilt over and over, while others are abandoned entirely. City & state assembly meetings, deciding what gets rebuilt, what is made more resilient, and what is lost, modulated by how nice you were to them last year.

America already extorts water from Mexico from a river that starts *inside* of Mexico and that has fallen to a historical low. The pressure has been so immense that there have been *water riots* in my hometown that have led to the deaths of farmers. Americans do not get to shrug and give up.

we should buy out people in climate danger zones (wildfire, hurricane, and others) at as small a haircut as possible, relocate them somewhere else, and turn the land into nature preserves. we should do this both proactively and reactively.

the problem is that it is illegal to build at the density required for all Californians to live in the parts of California that are not firetraps, and that actually doing this program would get the right screaming "socialism" at the top of their lungs.
