Hoping to see similar again this year. My husband and I were up in the mountains at almost 10k ft in February 2023, and one of the lakes looked as if someone had stopped time. Some ripples were several inches deep, it was so smooth, and you could see several feet down. Picture doesn't do it justice.
Rocky Mountain is an incredible place to be in the early months of the year. Not too crowded, beautiful trails, and stunning wildlife. I cannot recommend visiting it enough.
Steller's jay. They're really successful at high altitudes, so there are a ton in RMNP. Most birds hunker down in the winter, but they continue to forage, so it's almost impossible to be up there in the winter without seeing a bunch of them.
Better the lakes looking like that than the roads! Fond memories of walking out on Mendota at night when it was frozen and hearing the haunting sounds of cracking and shifting ice.

I'm so fortunate to live there now.
