Why is this runnel/rail/stair wrong? A runnel on the stair side is hazardous to people who need to use the rail. People with bikes in the runnel can tilt their bike easily to avoid the rail or the fence. I do it every day. The railings aren’t ornamental, people use the damn things! - ThreadSky

The unfortunate problem with runnels is that they conflict with the needs of others who require support getting up and down stairs. The Europeans have better runnels because they deprioritize accessibility. 🤷‍♂️

In low traffic areas you can get away with a runnel only on one side of the stair outside of the railing, but in high traffic areas you need both sides to have runnels (up and down) outside of the railing or you are right, it will conflict with people using the railings.

this one is completely unusable. there's no room to tilt the bike because of the handrail, and the rider can't walk up the ramp because it's too steep. this also doesn't fit cargo bikes.

we have a long history of poorly designed runnels in this city. @pushtheneedle.bsky.social is it northgate?

Oh, sorry, I didn’t catch the walking on the ramp part. No, the rider should be walking on the stairs, not on the ramp. You roll the bike up and down the ramp as you walk up or down the stairs.

Northgate, Roosevelt and U District stations the tunnels were installed and detailed wrong. After we made a stink about it apparently ST updated their standards and said it was embarrassing

Ok, I exaggerated, a few days a week. But if you are able enough to ride a bike to work, you are able enough to tilt their bike sufficiently to clear the railing and fence as you walk down the stairs.
