Also can't help but think that Grub unconsciously changed his form because he genuinely thinks he's a slob in those clothes. That or because it help him fit better in them

Indeed, he did. Though it's also considered "part of the attire". It's a large part of why he hates looking like this; he's more comfortable looking like a gremlin.
