Nearly a year into the first outbreak of the bird flu among cattle, the virus shows no sign of slowing. The U.S. government failed to eliminate the virus on dairy farms when it was confined to a handful of states. (via @kffhealthnews.bsky.social )

Strains of recent US cases have so far resulted in mild infection
but historically, H5N1 has approx 50% case fatality rate in humans. It needs to be taken seriously, which the US govt is not doing. Also, an infection can cause misery for a week or more & still be considered "mild." 😞
I really only takes a few uncooperative producers, shipping their contaminated products to create a national problem. Even if every producer caught the infection early, there is still spread through wildlife.
How can the government control that?
Trump really will send us into another chaotic pandemic with half the country not believing in vaccines.
With RFK, Jr. overseeing this, we are all in BIG trouble.
“He noticed a shift in attitudes among farmers at the Dairy Expo: ‘They’re starting to say, ‘How do I save my dairy for the next generation?’ They recognize how severe this is, and that it’s not just going away.’”
“This wasn’t just immaculate conception,” said Stephen Morrison, director of the Global Health Policy Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “It came from somewhere…hasn’t triggered any kind of reset in approach — just the same kind of complacency and low energy.”
And this…Finland is offering vaccines but CDC is not. I’m sure there’s the MAGA nut believing in it, and one quoted said they are very “minimal government” and basically, difficult to work with.
This is a disaster in the making.
“Virologists around the world said they were flabbergasted by how poorly the United States was tracking the situation….’If three months from now we are at the start of the pandemic, it is nobody’s surprise.’” 😳
“To contain it, two poultry operations employed about 650 temporary workers — Spanish-speaking immigrants as young as 15 — to cull flocks…they caught infected birds, gassed them with carbon dioxide, and disposed of the carcasses. Many did the hazardous job without goggles, face masks, and gloves.”
“Some farmers told health officials not to visit and declined to monitor their employees for signs of sickness. Sending workers to clinics for testing could leave them shorthanded when cattle needed care.”
Trump was an illegal candidate & the US Constitution does not allow him to take office again. Why isn't more being done to prevent his unlawful return to power? The SCOTUS determined states couldn't refuse to put him on their ballots, not that he hadn't violated his oath of office via insurrection.
I really hate articles that are written like stories. I want information, not sensationalism. Learn how to be a journalist and not some hokey writer with a word count quota. Fuck.
The article describes a lot of the collapses in the expected response from various agencies and groups, from federal organizations to local farmer groups. What's next for the average person?
