With everything happening in the US right now, how safe are scientific conferences for foreign participants in the US? I think this is something we have to discuss as a scientific community. I am hesitating to register for US meetings due to the unpredictable situation. Others who feel the same?

If we want to go down that rabbit hole (one which is not so fictional), then you have to look at US scientists traveling to others countries as being treated similarly in the next phase. If they attend something with an AI buzzword? They might be next on the Gestapo's list.

Shortly after inauguration there was a US writer objecting to go to a conference elsewhere in the world due to human rights violations.

I pointed out the US was also no longer safe and was told I was going to be muted.

I wonder how they’re feeling about it all now.

I'm telling people not to come. There is a lawlessness happening here we haven't seen before and it is cruel and unpredictable and doesn't care who you are or where you are from. They want numbers and bodies to report and investors of private prisons to please. It's not worth it we are broken.

I guess it depends on your tolerance for risk. There hundreds of thousands, if not more, visitors to the US every year. From the stories I've read, only a handful have been detained, not even enough to constitute a rounding error. There are plenty of reasons to not visit, but this isn't one of them.
