Absolutely agree with what @lnbdublin.bsky.social just said on TV. Far right targeted SF (& fought very dirty) in working class constituencies. They targeted the Greens also but not FF/FG. Govt parties & media stood back & let it happen, even fed the flames. Anything that hurt SF was OK with them. - ThreadSky

Now, I am as pissed off with SF as I could be. I understand that they were under pressure from the far right, but they made the wrong call on that. They pandered to their right wing, botched immigration policy & lgbt rights. They burnt a lot of goodwill among left-leaning youth.

The right wing electoral threat to SF's vote did not really materialise. And young, left-leaning people who were energised first time voters in the last general, were alienated by pre-locals shenanigans. But this GE is actually a remarkable recovery for SF since the locals.

Everybody - left, centre, right & extreme far-right lunatic fringe - threw shite at SF during this campaign, but they will go into opposition with strong numbers, against a weak government. I'm pissed off with them. Lots on the left are pissed off with them, but they did well.

Hopefully, now that they've vanquished the far right (& they have), they will start to rebuild support on the left. Hopefully, they (& all other left wing parties) will refocus on defending human rights as well as economic issues.
