Lots of tiny purchases at multiple websites is unsustainable—each costs shipping & handling. That increases consumer costs, and is a main reason not everyone can just quit using a hub site. You could increase costs by hundreds. Most brick & mortar are closed or overcharging like pharmacy stores.

This is part of the problem, think of all the smaller companies put out of business while Amazon underpays the workers.
Now when we want to shop elsewhere, it's not so easy.

Amazon made us forget the Internet was already a giant mall. I always Google what I'm looking for and ignore all the Amazon links and usually find some alts. Convenience and speed will be sacrificed, but it is a worthwhile price to pay right now.

Yes! Only some shops sell on Amazon exclusively. I would love for someone to create an alt-Amazon (let's call it Boreal lol) that amalgamates all online shops by region, so I can order online from a seller close to me (or go irl if I feel like it/is possible)

We also need to remember that unless items are essential, we should stop shopping! Tell those clowns to f off. We need to start being more frugal for a while, shop local or thrift/barter/trade. You can always shop costco online for bulk essentials.

Yes. 👏 and if you must shop, be thoughtful of your purchases, no impulse buys, shop local, small business, woman black/ethnic owned, Blue state, Canadian and Mexican. Also, start a small garden if you can! Every little bet helps.

We’ve signed up for Costco for bulk, Chewy for pets, Newegg for tech. We have a sprouts opening next month for whatever our farmers market doesn’t have. We don’t buy junk food. Making progress.

I agree to a point, but if one can afford to buy something that brings them joy, they should be able to do it without being shamed. Sometimes it’s little things that help keeps us going and just buying necessities all the time is depressing. We fight for bread AND roses.

I have often found that eBay has quite a few products and for less money. For example, water filters for my refrigerator. I’ve purchased them new on eBay for over $20 less than I’ve found them in Walmart or Amazon. It’s worth a quick search. I’ve never had any major issues purchasing on eBay.

For groceries, I switched to Instacart and buy from Costco, Ralphs, and Walmart (the latter is only because they actually carry fat free shredded cheese). I might change it up, though, and go to a nearby farmer's market; I just found out there's one in Hillcrest that runs every Sunday!

For clothes and accessories, I mainly use Shein, Etsy and eBay, but would like to start going to local thrift shops soon. I know there are a couple nearby; just rarely have the time to go to any 😩

I appreciate the shop local sentiment, but Amazon has decimated brick and mortar businesses in my area. I need a place to buy essentials besides the grocery store. One thing Amazon does right is have a lot of options, making it hard to cut them out entirely.

I think people who use it a lot think it’s the only option. I dropped Amazon at the beginning of February. I have not missed it. I live 45 minutes from any town big enough to have a Walmart. I’ve found other options.

Usually, there is a link, which I think brings you directly to the supplier. Shipping will likely take longer. In some instances, you may have to pay a bit more. If that doesn't work, at least you should be able to get manufacture and product specs & information to go look for it outside of Amazon.

For books I use bookshop or betterworldbooks, I normally use it for that. People say that some have links to other store fronts that way you can order from them directly and not Amazon but I’m not to sure. When I’m looking for something specific I try to google search. Sorry it’s not more helpful.

Many indie bookstores have websites from which you can order books directly.

A thought: choose a bookstore -- one local to you would be great, but any of us would appreciate it -- and make that shop your "Amaz*n" for your books.
