I returned from my first trip a few days ago, and one of the notable things was the number of shops that do one single size item. The staff look you up and down and remind you. . I said to my SO " this must be a nightmare if you're overweight". She pointed out Japan's sky high suicide rates.
I didn't read the comment as fatphobic BC just 2 weeks there really highlighted how normalised obesity is in our culture, and how fatphobic all of Japan would seem to anyone used to our norms of talking about it.
I lost count the number of times I complained about not having my size t-shirt in stock ( Large UK ) and was told to 'lose weight' by staff who were being helpful, and by their high standards, polite. It convinced me that our (and my) sensitivity to this is part of our (my) problem.
